There's been a 16% increase in the number of births in the first three months of this year compared to the same period in 2021.

The CSO says there were 16,131 babies born between January and March, while last year it was just under 14,000.

While the average age of mothers is increasing slightly, there's also been an increase in the number of teenage mothers.

10 years ago the average age of a mother was 31.8, while now it's 33.3 years.

There's also been an increase of 1,000 marriages in the first three months compared to the same period in 2021, however, start of last year was impacted by Covid restrictions.

The number of children being born to couples who aren't married continues to rise, and in the first three months of 2022 43.6% of all births were outside marriage.

That total compares to 35.9% 10 years ago.
