12% of motorcyclists have been in a crash in the past two years according to the Road Safety Authority, while three in five have had a near miss in the same period.

Bikers are being reminded that speeding is a factor in half of all motorcyclist fatal collisions ahead of the May bank holiday weekend.

4 people have died on motorbikes so far this year, that's three more than the same period last year.

In 2018 there were 15 motorcyclist deaths on Irish roads, over 60% of which occurred on rural roads with speed limits of 80km or higher.

Riders also risk serious spinal injury following a collision on a motorbike.

Dr Keith Synnott is a consultant at the National Spinal Injuries Unit in the Mater Hospital, he says people don't realise how life changing these injuries can be. 'Using a wheelchair is the least of it, when you're paralysed, not only can you not feel your legs but you can't feel your skin so you get pressure sores if you sit for too long, you can't manage your bowl or you bladder so someone needs to do that for you, sexual function can be effected, you may be infertile'.

The RSA and Gardai are also highlighting he misuse of quad bikes and scramblers on the road and in public places this bank holiday weekend.
