Maybe 1990 is too long ago to remember but if you're a video game fan you might remember the ethereal, uniquely honeyed sounds of Mazzy Star singer Hope Sandoval from the old Gears of War 3 trailer which juxtaposed the aching atmosphere of "Into Dust" with the game's dystopian tragedy.
It was a smart move - one that had already proved successful when Gears of War had used Gary Jules' "Mad World" to conjure the futile tragedy of war. The game centres on a combat squad who attempt to save the planet from a terrible subterranean, alien enemy.

The good news is Mazzy Star have announced a new album "Seasons of Your Day" which will be available on September 24th. Here is "California" from the forthcoming release. Fans will be pleased.
