We all have our favourite. That song that we shouldn't actually like.
Despite our reeeeeaaaaaally credible music taste, we all have our guilty pleasures.
Picture an Irish wedding at 11.30pm, the opening notes of La Bamba ring out and the dancefloor suddenly resembles Woodstock. There are limbs flailing everywhere, ties on heads, shoes kicked off and air guitars in full swing.
Here's a selection of the best:
1) Come On Eileen - Dexys Midnight Runners
They have unruly hair, they wear dungarees and they play the banjo in their bare-feet but somehow Dexys Midnight Runners have the ability to make the most poised of us jump up and roar "Too-raaa-toora-ta-loo -rye -aye" at the top of our lungs. And we wouldn't have it any other way.
2) Jump Around - House Of Pain
After "Pack it up, pack it in", most of us haven't a clue what's actually going on but this classic tune will have a room jumping around in 0.5 seconds. The wannabe rappers in the crowd mumble along whilst the rest of us give our best hippity hoppity dance moves. Classic.
3) Saturday Night - Whigfield
Lets face it, we all wanted to either be or be with Whigfield. With her beautiful Scandinavian looks and cool plaits in her hair, she was deadly. Plus she was celebrating the best night of the week - Saturday! Everyone had the dance down and it can still be wheeled out at any major social event. Di, di, di, da, da.
4) YMCA - Village People
This is the ultimate "Dad at a wedding" dance ; hands in the air, attempting to make a letter, unsure of what that letter actually is. YMCA is the song we love to hate and hate to love. But like it or loathe it, it is the song that makes us want to stand on a stage / table / chair and point at any man in the room whilst roaring "Young Man". Altogether now "It's fun to stay at the...."
5) Cotton Eye Joe - Rednex
This song hit right at the peak of the "line dancing" craze in Ireland and it continues to make us want to dance like we're wearing cowboy boots and stetson. It draws us all on the dancefloor to do our best "linking arms, throwing ourselves around the floor" moves. And you may pretend, but you LOVE IT.
