It’s going to be an interesting year at the Academy Awards with a number of high-profile movies going head-to-head for the major trophies. American Hustle and Gravity lead the nominations with 10 nods each while 12 Years A Slave checks in just behind with 9 nominations.
In competition against those three films in the Best Picture category will be Nebraska, The Wolf of Wall Street, Dallas Buyers Club, Her, Philomena and Captain Phillips.
Martin Scorcese (The Wolf On Wall Street), Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity), Alexander Payne (Nebraska), Steve McQueen (12 Years A Slave) and David O. Russell (American Hustle) will contest the coveted award for Direction while the acting categories will also be a tough on to call with some big names in the mix.
Amy Adams faces four previous Oscar winners in the Best Actress category with Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock and Judi Dench all in the running. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Matthew McConaughey get their first Academy Award nods and will be up against Leonardo diCaprio, Bruce Dern and Christian Bale for Best Actor.
The Irish set will be happy with Michael Fassbender nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category for 12 Years A Slave and U2 nominated for their song ‘Ordinary Love’ in the Best Original Song category. The track featured on the soundtrack to Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom.
