Tick tock, tick tock… the Picnic clock is ticking with a few days to go until the early bird tickets disappear forever. As the seconds fall away Electric Picnic have lifted the lid of their basket once more to reveal 13 more top class acts to join Bjork, Fatboy Slim and the rest of this year’s fabulous display of performing talent.
Emerging from musical hibernation and ready to send this year’s Picnicers into disco shock is legendary singer songwriter, producer and all round 80’s musical God, GIORGIO MORODER Straight from his debut DJ set in New York, this will be Moroder’s first time ever to perform in Ireland, this paired with the fact that Moroder will be joined in Stradbally by Grammy nominated American DJ, CHRIS COX is most definitely the icing on Electric Picnic’s birthday cake. Having brought us all our favourite 80’s film soundtracks, synth pop beats and disco floor fillers collaborating with acts such as Debbie Harry, Phil Oakley, Donna Summer, David Bowie and recently partnering on Daft Punk’s album Random Access Memories, we can’t think of a better way to kick off this year’s Picnic.
Hot from the fields of Glastonbury, Northern Ireland’s indie princes will be gracing Electric Picnic with their contagious sound. The three piece have had smash hits with ‘Undercover Martin’ and ‘Something Good Can Work’ and having won the Choice Music Prize in 2010 for their album ‘Tourist History’ have firmly placed themselves into Ireland’s music tapestry.
Ready to take festival revellers on a kaleidoscopic musical adventure are THE DUCKWORTH LEWIS METHOD. Taking their name from an incomprehensible cricket formula, the duo comprising of the Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon and Pugwash's Thomas Walsh is a joyful proposition of cricket, pop and great lyrics. After the release of their second album, ‘Sticky Wickets’ this July, Picnic go-ers should get ready to be bowled over!
Continuing to make a New England, BILLY BRAGG has his sights firmly set on Stradbally. The British singer song writer will be bringing his unique blend of folk, punk and protest fuelled music to the stage at Electric Picnic.
With their smash hits ‘High Hopes’ and ‘All I want’ plus an Irish number 1 debut album ‘Perfect World’ to boot, it is safe to say Dublin four piece, KODALINE have had a whirlwind initiation into the music industry. Picnic go-ers are in for a treat with their trademark haunting melodies, anthemic lyrics and spine tingling moments.
Sydney duo, JAGWAR MA broke onto the scene with their spectacular debut single ‘The Throw’ followed byJagwar Ma’s debut album 'Howlin’’ which was released earlier this year to much critical acclaim. If you are looking for two impenitent Madchester revivalists who are sure to put on a modernized show of a scene they never actually experienced first-hand, but do it with incredible conviction, these guys have exactly what you’re looking for.
Famous for his occasional R&B electronic mixes, Swiss and Vancouver-based DJ, CYRIL HAHN is Electric Picnic bound following a string of European dates and sold out Dublin shows. Stradbally will definitely not be flat lining with this man’s presence onsite.
Tearing up the Danish music scene is singer songwriter MØ who is packing her bags and bound for Stradbally. After her debut single release ‘Pilgrim’, MØbeen tipped as the next Grimes so festival revellers get ready to soak in the soulful electronica and sultry vocals of MØ.
Electronic pop duo YOUNG WONDER is comprised of producer Ian Ring and vocalist Rachel Koeman. Following the release of their debut EP, the album ‘Show Your Teeth’ was released in May this year. Tracks ‘To You’, ‘Time’ and ‘Electrified’ have seen the band acclaimed by Clash, Best Fit, DIY, The Fly, Wonderland Magazine and Pitchfork for the sonic union of Ian Ring's intricate production and Rachel Koeman's powerful vocal. They make music with big beats, euphoric synths and pitched vocals, Picnicers are sure to enjoy the band’s ethereal sounds on the rolling lawns of Stradbally.
Canadian three piece BRAIDS will be taking in their first outing at Electric Picnic this year. And they will have something to celebrate with music fans – the release of their second album ‘Flourish // Perish’ due in late August. Their sound has changed of late, often described as ‘dream pop’ they have ditched the guitars for their second LP and heading down a more electronic route.
Having formed by accident after deciding to cover a song by The Flamingoes, SUMMER CAMP did not initially reveal their identities, claiming to be six Swedish teenagers. However the word is out on this London Duo and they are ready to show Stradbally crowds their 21st century alt pop and will be one performance not to be missed.
From Copenhagen, INDIANS is the work of one man, Søren Løkke Juul, who brought his band into being when he felt the need to challenge himself and do something different. Not aiming for anything other than satisfying a creative urge, things have snowballed quickly for him ever since. Stradbally better brace itself for a performance that is sure to break the boundaries of folk, piano balladry and arena rock.
After featuring on Naughty Boy’s ‘La La La’ and fellow Picnic bound Disclosures ‘Latch’, British urban and R’n’B singer SAM SMITH is ready to bring his own sound to EP. Having released his debut single ‘Lay me Down’ earlier this year, the 21 year old is one to watch and will definitely give festival revellers a performance to latch onto!
This completes the Electrifying line-up, for now. In typical Picnic style, there are hidden treasures that have yet to be unveiled. With the clock ticking on your chance to snatch the early bird tickets, will you wait to see what is yet to come?
Happy 10th birthday EP - Ireland’s National Treasure.
