More commuters are opting to take the train, according to figures released by Iarnród Éireann today.
Rail passenger journeys on Intercity, Dart and commuter trains were up by 650,000 in the first six months of this year.
Iarnród Éireann has said the increase in journeys is due to a number of factors including Leap Card initiatives, online sales promotions, and economic growth and stabilisation.
However, Mark Gleeson says the problem is that the railway system is not adequate to deal with the numbers who want to use it now, so how will it cope as number continue to increase?
One of the main complaints is the pre-booking system where you’re supposed to be able to reserve a seat for yourself.
Yet what happens too often is that people turn up and there is someone in their seat, or the reservation lights have not been switched on, so people in all innocence are sitting down in seats that have been reserved by someone else.
And because there are no staff members other than the driver on most Irish Rail trains around the country, there’s nobody you can complain to.
