Mobile phone coverage could become the tech issue of this year’s general election, according to technology journalist Adrian Weckler amid claims by some TDs that 45% of the country has no mobile phone coverage.
Last week at the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications, TDs and senators lambasted telecoms regulator Comreg on poor mobile phone coverage outside cities. It’s claimed that mobile phone coverage has actually gotten worse.
TDs are now routinely zeroing in on allegedly poor mobile phone coverage as their constituents' biggest tech challenge. People believe that mobile phone signals for voice calls have weakened in recent years. Whereas they used to be able to make calls at home or on a commuter route, they say they cannot anymore. Comreg, however, claims there is over 90% coverage with no fall-off in signal strength in recent years.
