The protest song has been a musical institution for decades. Whatever is happening in society, artists have always had something to say about it in their music.

So why aren't there more modern-day protest songs, given the current political climate?

It seems that two of the veterans are doing something about it. Mick Jagger has released new music inspired by Brexit and Donald Trump, while Paul McCartney has also written a song about Trump which will feature on his forthcoming album, due to be released later this year.

It's safe to say the former Beatle's new track will not be a complimentary one, given that he has previously accused Trump of unleashing "the ugly side of America."

John Caddell and Nadine O'Regan joined us for our weekly music slot to discuss this topic as well as the other big stories of the week, including the impending revival of MTV's Total Request Live.
