On yesterdays programme we met the accidental landlord, today we hear from Laura and Ellen on their experiences of renting.

The latest figures from the Private Residential Tenancies Board show that rents have increased again.

The nationwide rise in rents for the 12 months to the end of March was 6.5%, while the increase in Dublin averaged 9.6%. Outside Dublin there was an increase of 5.3%. However, the trend in the early months of this year shows rents rose by a higher percentage there as more people moved out of the capital.

We heard from Laura who lives in Maynooth with her partner and three children and feels rent controls need to be brought in to stop them spiraling out of control.

We also talked to Ellen, a single woman in her twenties who recently returned to Ireland.

She currently rents with a friend but said it took almost two months to find anything suitable.

"We spent every day trawling websites but kept losing out to older couples who landlords assume are more reliable."

"Two friends in their 20s are seen as a risk and landlords seem to think we’d be having parties every night" Listen back to hear the interview in full:
