Twenty per cent of children here are going to school or bed hungry, according to new statistics. It has also emerged that food poverty soared by 13.2% here in three years, rising from 450,000 people affected in 2010 to over 600,000 in 2013. Around 100 disadvantaged schools cannot avail of funds to provide children with school meals because they lack basic equipment such as fridges and cupboards or cannot afford to employ somebody to distribute the food.
