Actor Stephen McGann has had a long and varied career. He is probably best known to most people as one of the stars of the hugely popular drama series Call the Midwife.

He has now written a book called Flesh and Blood - A History of My Family in Seven Maladies, which looks at his family's history over the past 150 years through various diseases and ailments.

This stems from Stephen's real-life interest in science and medicine, which he spoke about during our Friday Profile interview:

"I went back to education in my forties and got really interested in science communication. For me, it was the way it makes people think about themselves and their own lives."

He also explained the appeal of Call the Midwife, which is now shown in 237 territories around the world:

"It's about the humanity in medicine. What you see is families, life, death, relationships and the things we're all alike in, and people really respond to that."

Although the subject of maladies may appear bleak at first, Stephen describes his book as "a story of triumph." His family originally came from Co. Roscommon and arrived in Liverpool after the Famine.

The McGanns are also arguably one of Britain's best known acting families - Stephen's brothers, Joe, Paul and Mark, have all carved out successful careers in the field.

However, there wasn't anything in their background that would suggest they were destined for that line of work.

"We weren't from a theatrical family - we just became one. We were factory workers, we didn't know a single actor and we never went to the theatre as a family. Now we're all actors and we don't have any idea how that played its way out."
