With the news that politicians will have to stand for the Dail prayer, we ask whether religion should have any place in politics.
Michael Healy Rae, TD for Kerry South, feels that Ireland is a Catholic country and the Dail prayer is a tradition that should be upheld: "I can see absolutely nothing wrong with us having to stand up, bless ourselves and say a quiet prayer."
But Michael Nugent, chairperson of Atheist Ireland, does not agree. "There's absolutely no reason for the state to be involved in promoting either religion or atheism. The only way to protect equally everybody's right to freedom of religion and belief is for the state to remain neutral."
