Speaking at a US embassy conference, Ryanair's Michael O'Leary strongly disagreed with proposals by Dublin City Council to increase the number of bikes available to citizens. The last thing the capital needs is more bikes, he said. Instead, he suggested, cyclists "should be taken out and shot".

"That's all we need: more bloomin' bicycles," he said. "In a country where it rains about 250 days per year, they way forward in Dublin is: more bicycles.

"Let's just go back to walking all together. Soon, we'll be living in caves designed by Dublin City Council. Traffic won't work, there's nowhere to park the cars and yet this is a smarter way forward?"
