A major overhaul of state-sponsored apprenticeships was unveiled in 2015, aimed at providing school-leavers with a “viable, legitimate, positive alternative path” to third-level education. It will be rolled out in 2016.
This major overhaul of State-sponsored apprenticeships should give school leavers a positive alternative path to third-level education, as well as meeting the needs of industry.
Some 25 new apprenticeships will be available next year, including in areas such as software development and polymer processing – alongside more recognisable ones for bakers, chefs and welders.
Michael Moriarty, General Secretary, Education and Training Boards Ireland, Eamonn Devoy, General Secretary of Technical Engineering and Electrical Union & board member of the Apprenticeship Council of Ireland tell Matt how the new scheme will work.
Des Kavanagh, MD at Jungheinrich Ireland and Deirdre McGlone, owner of Harvey’s Point Hotel in Donegal also join Matt to tell of their positive experiences of apprenticeships.
