The issue of abortion is one of the key general election issues for many in Ireland with a strong campaign to repeal the 8th Amendment that gives equal right to the life of the mother and the unborn in the Constitution.

As many as 28% of voters say the issue of abortion is going to be deciding factor in the next general election.

Cora Sherlock, Deputy chair of the Pro Life Campaign, argues that there is a real dishonesty in framing the debate on the basis that repealing the 8th amendment will save women's lives.

Ailbhe Smyth of the Coalition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment says the State has to face up the reality and stop hiding behind the escape route of abortion in the UK.

Ahead of the general election, Labour’s Anne Ferris and general election candidate for Wicklow also debates the issue with Fianna Fáil’s Billy Kelleher and general election candidate for Cork North–Central
