A proposed election advertisement by the Labour Party depicting Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin and Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams as newlyweds has been leaked.

The poster warns voters: “this is one marriage we should vote NO to this year.”

The “attack advert” was drawn up for possible use in the forthcoming general election.

The poster also features left-wing TDs Richard Boyd-Barrett, Paul MurphyMick Wallace and Clare Daly in the wedding party.

However Labour are now distancing themselves from the poster, demonstrating just how difficult it is to get advertising campaigns in elections right..

A senior Labour source told the Sunday Independent that the advert was  making a "serious point in a humorous way". Fianna Fail’s Barry Cowen, however, said the ad would only “heighten people's abhorrence of Labour's tactics.. Sinn Fein called the poster ‘desperate
