With several high profile gangland murders in recent weeks as well as the terrorists attacks in Belgium and France, Gardai are now asking is it possible for them to remain unarmed.
The issue of arming gardai is one of the major issues at the Garda Representative Association conference which starts today in Killarney.
Gardai say they need an intermediate form of force such as a taser as Irish society is getting more dangerous and a baton is no longer adequate.
Dermot O’Brien, President of the Garda Representative Association, says uniformed Gardai on the beat should have access to tasers.
