The last number of years has seen an influx of refugees into Europe, and it's an issue that is still at the forefront of everyone's minds. But are we handling the situation properly?

Alexander Betts is co-author of the book 'Refuge', which focuses on how we can transform our 'broken' refugee system. He discussed his ideas with Matt on today's show.

Alexander says that we now have "more displaced people around the world than at any time since the Second World War", most of whom are in developing countries. For those who move to Europe, "we need radical solutions that can meet our public's concerns as well as meeting needs."

The message of the book is empowering people to help themselves. Alexander points out that refugees don't just have vulnerabilities, but skills and talents that need to be encouraged "to allow them to work and to integrate." He also feels that solutions need to be found in countries which are closer to refugees' countries of origin.
