Professor Brian Wansink, author of the Nudge Theory, is behind the new Slim by Design Movement which looks at how the design of where people eat or purchase food (homes, schools, restaurants, workplaces, and supermarkets) influences eating choices. He has developed solutions that help people to eat better, shop like a slim person, and to eat less at home without thinking about it. Here's a few tips from Professor Wansink: EACH ONE OF US MAKES MORE THAN 200 NEARLY SUBCONSCIOUS FOOD DECISIONS EVERY DAY—SOUP OR SALAD? PLATES OR BOWLS? BUT MOST OF THESE SUBTLE NUDGES PUSH US TO EAT TOO MUCH. Becoming Slim by Design means taking small actions in the five places that booby-trap most of our eating: our home, our favorite restaurants, our corner grocery store, our office, and our child’s school lunchroom. As we’ve gotten older, wiser, and lazier, we’ve gradually arranged our homes to make our favorite tasty foods easier to find and eat. Meanwhile, the same thing has been happening all around us. Restaurants have made it easier to order tasty food. Supermarkets have made it easier to buy. Workplaces have made it easier to eat at our desks. School lunchrooms have made it easier to pile everything onto a tray. It has all helped to make us “fat by design.” HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN DO: Make it easier to eat better, without fighting yourself all day long. 1. Fix your kitchen. Use the 10-point scorecard above to show you how your kitchen is making you slim or fat. 2. Rate your office, grocery stores, and restaurants according to how well they help you become Slim By Design, then talk with the managers about how to support your weight loss goals. See the scorecards above. 3. Sign up for our mailing list to get more tips. Becoming Slim By Design relies on small, one-time changes to your environment. You don’t need any special skills to make these changes. All you need to know is what to do–and how to ask all of these places and people around you to help. Let’s get started!
