In the aftermath of Tom Humphries being sentenced to two and a half years in prison for sexually abusing a teenage girl, what can be done by sports clubs to protect children from predators?

Sinead O'Carroll, news editor of The Journal, has written about how young girls involved in sport often seek the approval of their coaches, and how - in the case of Tom Humphries - that trust can be abused.

"When you look at the idea of a grown man texting a 14-year-old anything, it would seem absolutely insane."

"Back then it wouldn't have raised as many red flags because of Humphries' position - the fact that he was a very well known, trusted individual."

Una May, Sport Ireland's Director of Participation and Ethics, spoke about the measures that clubs can take to prevent this kind of thing happening.

"Awareness training commenced in 2004. People are making themselves more aware and it's helping, but on an ongoing basis we update our practices and procedures in terms of what's available."

"The problem in the past was that people were willing to trust, and sadly now we just can't. Every club should have a children's officer, and that person's responsibility is to ensure that the club has the correct policies in place and that the information is shared with people."
