In the first part of our Home Truths series on Ireland's housing crisis, we looked at social housing.
Michelle Murphy of Social Justice Ireland said the government needs to address the social housing issue by taking responsibility for investment.
"In 2015 we only built 476 social housing units for the entire country. The land is there, and we have made proposals about funding. This issue hasn't emerged overnight but there seems to be a barrier when it comes to decision making particularly at government level."
Sinn Féin housing spokesman Eoin Ó Broin added, "I've been convinced for some years that the shift away from the direct provision of local authority housing towards the over-reliance on the private sector is because the state doesn't want to own the assets long-term. They much prefer somebody else to put the capital up front."
"I also think there's a misconception about social housing. The overwhelming majority of local authority housing estates are really good places to live, so the idea that you create ghettos isn't actually true."
Tom Parlon, Director General of the Construction Industry Federation, said, "There seems to be a lack of dynamic between the Department of Housing and the local authorities, and maybe they've lost some of the expertise there.
"It's my experience that there's an inertia and a lack of people standing up to take responsibility."
