In the second part of Home Truths, our series on the housing crisis in Ireland, we looked at renting.
David Silke, director of research at The Housing Agency, explained why most people end up renting even if they would prefer to own a house.
"Stability is the big thing that people want, but there are lots of people who are living in houses they can't afford to pay the mortgage on or they're in negative equity."
"Rents vary greatly across the country. Outside Dublin it's still much cheaper to rent than it is to buy."
Karl Deeter of Irish Mortgage Brokers added that more people will end up renting by design.
"If you look at people who haven't bought so far, they are coming out of school much later and they're not going into the kind of permanent jobs that other people had. The wages are lower, the certainty of employment is lower, and that reduces your ability to save."
