The humble hashtag celebrates its tenth birthday today, and it's easy to forget that there was a time when we didn't use it the way we do today.
The hashtag originated on Twitter as a way of categorising what people were talking about. It has since spread to other social media outlets, such as Instagram, and has become an integral part of everyday communication.
