Gerry Adams has come in for some criticism for suggesting that a bottle of wine costs €30.
Lise Hand, columnist with the Times Ireland edition, said Adams was "caught flat-footed" by the reaction his remark received in the Dáil: "He didn't know whether to come back to it or ignore the whole thing."
So just how much can you expect to pay for a bottle of wine?
Tomás Clancy, wine correspondent with the Sunday Business Post, says that €29.50 is the lowest you could expect in any restaurant. In your local off-licence, it's a different story.
"€30 is not the average price, but it's like fish - you can pay €1.99 for fish fingers or €185 for a tuna fin. People look for the best quality at the cheapest price."
