Type 2 diabetes affects 225,000 people in Ireland.
Lidl Ireland's Health and Wellness campaign is raising awareness of the condition, and they have a somewhat unlikely ambassador - none other than Dustin the turkey.
Dustin joined us in studio, alongside Dr. Ciara Kelly, to explain more about type 2 diabetes.
There are big differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. With type 1, the body doesn't produce enough insulin. With type 2, the body does produce insulin but can't use it properly. It can, however, be prevented.
"Keeping your body weight down reduces your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 80 per cent," Dr. Ciara explained.
"Loads of people don't know they have it, and 450,000 people are pre-diabetic."
Dustin was keen to get involved in the campaign - even though, as he admitted, he didn't know anything about diabetes beforehand, as "turkeys don't get it."
His message to everyone is: get yourself checked.
