A recent survey found that 61% of people incorrectly believed that certain yoghurt products were a healthy low sugar choice, when in fact they contain over 12g of sugar per serving.
Which is why Fine Gael Dublin Senator Catherine Noone is backing calls from parents to introduce a traffic light labelling system to help inform them of the sugar content in foods.
Orla Walsh, dietitian at the Dublin Nutrition Centre, says food labels should be made simpler by stating how many teaspoons of sugar are in the product rather than grams and percentages.
