Dermot Whelan has quit the drink. The timing is probably ideal as the government has just started the process of introducing a minimum price for alcohol. A bottle of wine would cost a minimum of €8.80 and a can of beer at least €2.20 under the proposals aimed at outlawing cheap alcohol sales.
Dermot says he loves booze, but after every session he wakes up feeling absolutely awful the next day
"Lots of drinkers feel brutal after a session, but hide it and shout loudly about ‘the craic’ etc. One night's fun for a three day hangover – it's a terrible exchange rate. Maybe its an age thing – hangovers get far less tolerable with age".
Dermot's wife says he gets seriously down on himself when he's hungover and she hates to see it. So Dermot's quitting!
