Dave Hannigan is a regular contributor to The Last Word, often talking about sport and American politics.
He has now written a new book, Boy Wonder, about his childhood in Cork.
Dave has lived in America for many years and says he wanted to write about the Ireland he knew in the 70s and 80s. He was prompted to write the book by his children.
"I have three boys growing up in Long Island in very different circumstances to the Ireland that I grew up in. I wanted to document that time in Irish life and capture it before we all forget it."
"Being gone for so long gives you a detachment and a distance that makes it easier to write about. In America you're encouraged to talk about your feelings and bare your soul about childhood memories."
Dave spoke to Matt about some of his memories of Cork, including those related to sport, and explained why he still has an attachment to where he came from, despite 25 years away: "Cork is a state of mind that you bring with you wherever you go."
