In the nineties and noughties, Dublin moved into neighbouring counties, turning large tracts of countryside into a commuter belt.

The results of this new settlement pattern have not been all bad.

However, we have ended up with a situation where an average commuter can spend seven hours each week just driving to and from work.

Conor Faughnan says the priority needs to be more public transport.
