It's only five years since the completion of extensive upgrades to the M50 motorway, but the traffic congestion they were designed to defeat is back with a vengeance. Now, traffic authorities have come up with a plan to reduce speed limits on the motorway in a bid to maintain flow at peak times. Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe said today that he was “frustrated” that commuters were once again stuck in their cars for longer than necessary. “This is a scale of congestion difficulty that has developed so quickly,” he said. His officials are now looking at the precise speed limits that will be needed to ease the jams. However, Sean O'Neill told The Last Word that it would take about three years after a decision had been made to have the new limits in place.
