Conor McGregor has been widely condemned for making a homophobic slur over the weekend.
The remark was made in a dressing room video at a UFC event in Poland. The UFC have since deleted the video.
Brian Finnegan of Gay Community News explained that the the word McGregor used is "an offensive and oppressive term for gay people. Anyone who's in the public eye has a responsibility to not give permission to use that word."
Brian believes McGregor should not only apologise, but display "a recognition of what the 'F' word means. It's the same as a white person calling a person of colour the 'N' word."
Journalist Ewan McKenna added that, although he is weary of talking about McGregor, he felt it was important to speak out because "I don't want a normalisation of his behaviour where we just shrug our shoulders because he's done it again."
"He may not have meant it that way, but it doesn't matter - he said it. A lot of people around this have gone silent and rather than confronting it, they seem to be running from it."
