Legislation to ban bedsits was passed in 2009, with a four-year grace period ending early last year.
But this morning the Tánaiste says the ban should be reconsidered, with so many people needing accommodation.
The head of a leading housing charity says overturning the ban on bedsits - won't solve the homeless crisis.
Bob Jordan: Chief Executive of Threshold says it is "disingenuous" of the Tánaiste to say that this would solve the housing crisis.
"There are NOT thousands of bedsits lying empty. Landlords have modified these bedsits, they've put a bathroom in and they’re renting them out. There aren't thousands of vacant units. This would not solve the crisis.
But Fintan McNamara of the Residential Landlords Association believes the ban should be reversed in order to help students achieve an education and to cut down on homelessness within the capital.
It comes ahead of a Government organised forum on the crisis tomorrow - involving representatives of voluntary groups and local authorities.
