There are more than 2 million apps on Apple’s iOS store and the Android Play store. There is an app, for practically everything, here’s a few we chatted about on Tuesday’s Last Word:

Best Of The Irish

-          My Dublin Bus 2: A lovely looking app, as well as incredibly useful. For the average commuter, you don’t need all the features of an ‘official app’. Add your stops, see the next bus, and it even has a homescreen that changes based on the current weather and has a clever night mode making it easier to read.

-          Fuora: a historical photo tour of Dublin, based on where you’re standing. Simple but fun for kids or visitors.

-          Castro: Hi-fidelity podcasts – not only is it the best looking Podcast app, it makes it easy to discover new podcasts and broaden your listening habbits.

Get a Good Night’s Sleep

The best one is Sleepbot. It has a motion tracker, sound recorder and smart-alarm. (You place it face down on the bed next to you during the night)

With long term trend graphs, it’s great – but a battery hog. Also, SleepCycle at €0.99 is good for detecting motion or restlessness and you can customise the wake up from your music library.

Don’t Underestimate Email

If you use Gmail, get the app and the same if you use outlook.com. Both are native and Outlook particularly should be the model for all email apps.

And some unusual ones

Fake Caller and Fakesy allow you to create caller IDs, complete with photos and time phone calls so you can interrupt meetings – or put Trump’s picture on the caller ID etc etc. Fun, but useful for ending the evening early!

Wikitude: I love this: download it, open it and it uses your phone’s camera and overlays info from directories like Trip Advisor to show you restaurants and bars as you look at the street. Useful at home, but great if you’re travelling.
