The government's controversial Public Health Alcohol Bill is being debated in the Seanad today after a lengthy hiatus.

The bill would place restrictions on the advertising of alcohol, but would it actually make any sense?

Patricia Callan, Director of the Alcohol Beverage Federation of Ireland, explained why she is not in favour of the bill.

"We live in a global market. Our companies are doing phenomenal in terms of exports, and yet no other country in the world will have the types of warnings the department are proposing."

"More importantly, this is about consumer choice, responsible adults and education."

Fergus Finlay, CEO of Barnardos, believes legislation is needed to change our unhealthy relationship with alcohol: "We have a major cultural problem which I strongly believe is unique to us."

"Where drink is concerned, we can't treat ourselves as responsible because we're not. If we don't change the culture around alcohol, young people will die, older people will die and our hospitals will be full."
