A group of 30 children from the Chernobyl region of Belarus arrived at Dublin Airport yesterday for a two-week Christmas holiday.
It's part of the long-running efforts to help children affected by the ongoing effects of the 1986 nuclear disaster.
The children who come to Ireland for their Christmas holiday come from Vesnova Children’s Institute which is situated 170km from Chernobyl.
Adi spoke fondly of one boy, Igor, who will spend his Christmas with his ‘adopted’ family in Castlebar, Co Mayo.
Igor was abandoned to an orphanage as a baby and has suffered huge physical impairment all his life.
When Chernobyl Children International first found Igor, he lived like an animal, crawling on the floor and being fed on all fours. The only way he knew how to communicate was by biting, scratching and spitting.
Adi also spoke about running as a presidential candidate in 1997 but just weeks into the campaign; Adi believes she was the victim of a political smear campaign by rivals aimed to discredit her candidacy.
She spoke at length to the Last Word earlier, to hear the interview in full, listen back here:
