90% of people in Ireland believe fraud is a big problem, with 41% saying they have lost money through fraud.

That's according to Bank of Ireland's National Fraud survey (Oct 2024).

Bank of Ireland’s recent fraud survey reveals that the most common type of scam is fake online purchases at 41%, followed by those who had their bank details or card details stolen by fraudsters at 34%.

Bank of Ireland’s aim is to increase fraud awareness and help people to protect their financial wellbeing by keeping their personal and banking information safe online.

Impersonation is at the root of the majority of fraud in circulation.

We’ve all received texts from fraudsters as delivery companies, road toll companies, government agencies and banks.

Fraud is constantly evolving. With new scams every month, it is important to remain on the lookout for potential threats.

53% of people living in Ireland say they could be persuaded to buy during Black Friday Sales this year if they see an online offer that looks like good value.

Use Bank of Ireland’s Stop, Think, Check anti-fraud mantra if in doubt.

  • Only buy from reputable retailers and do not be rushed into buying, even if it looks like a bargain.
  • If it’s not a well-known shopping site, do some research.
  • Look for independent reviews on other websites, rather than trusting testimonials on the site itself.
  • And remember, if it looks too good to be true, it generally is
