The Golden Girls aired its very last episode on this day back in 1992. Running for 177 episodes the series introduced us to 4 of the most memorable comedy characters in television history. From saucy southern belle Blanche to the delightfully ditsy Rose, domineering Dorothy and her mischievous Sicilian Ma Sophia we all had our favourites and thanks to the incredible writing, casting and performances it still feels as fresh and relevant today as it ever did.
What The Golden Girls did so brilliantly was to show that life does not end when you hit 60. There’s a life of love, sex, drama and laughter to be had and that older people are as much craic as their grandkids...if not more! It was way ahead of its time in many ways. The Golden Girls took on HIV/AIDS in 1990, employed a gay male cook in the pilot, and even grappled with the idea that a beloved brother and son was a cross-dresser, perhaps even transgender.
It also helped to have one of THE greatest theme songs of all time.
The Golden Girls was much more than a story of 4 old ladies living out the rest of their days in Miami, it was one of the funniest, smartest, most important and memorable television shows of all time and we salute you ladies....thank you for being a friend!
Here's some of our favourite moments!
