This morning, “Proud in Kildare” sent a text into The Early Breakfast with Paula MacSweeney to say they had completed their first ever 10K WITHOUT STOPPING at the age of 42. Amazing!
So it got me thinking; when was the last time you did something for the first time? We got some amazing responses from listeners – every single one made my example look puny and pathetic but it’s not a competition, cough.
(Since you asked, my example was growing tulips for the first time – even if it was sort of an accident. I thought I had killed them so I left them in the bucket outside the back garden and nearly cart-wheeled when I went outside at the weekend to be greeted with beautiful tulips which had popped up thanks to all the sunshine and rain!)
I digress.
Here are some more interesting (but it’s not a competition, cough) examples.
- Hi Paula, I read a book in Spanish for the first time over Christmas. I’m an avid reader and can speak Spanish but only ever read books in English. It took a while but I got there! Karen, Dublin
- Hi Paula, I went snow-boarding for the first time age 30. I always wanted to go but could never find friends to go with me – so I just went on my own and fell in love with it! Ger
- Hi P, I cooked Christmas dinner for the first time last year. Not just for me, my husband and our children, but for my parents, siblings and their children too. I'm still not over the trauma! Sarah.
- Paula, not me, but my wee 6 year old son James, rode a bicycle without stabilisers the first time yesterday. I TAUGHT HIM. Pat the Trucker
- Hi Paula first time texting you does that count??? From Ger and Brendan on way to Dublin from Castlebar.
- Got my degree and then masters degree in my 30's...Gary
- Paula after all your talk of Tinder, I downloaded it and went on my first ever online date 2 months ago! I’ve been on 3 more since! Sharon, Cork.
- Flew first class last summer. 9-hour flight, yes please! It was unreal. (Economy on the way back was soooo disappointing!)
- Hi Paula. I'm 48 and got my first tattoo 6 months ago - an outline of a kitty on the inside of my ankle in memory of my little kitty who died suddenly. Also got belly button pierced at 38..Love the show! Wendy
- Hi Paula I told my wife she was wrong. ....first time but I said it in an acceptable way....I'm still alive. Alan Dundalk
And my absolute favourite arrived in tweet form, thanks to Siobhain (who got a MacSweeney Beanie for her efforts). Who am I kidding – it was a competition, and Siobhain totally won:
@sweetpmac.Lifes all about first times: 3wks ago, alone in Japan bathed naked with a group of complete strangers #liberating #macbeanie😉
