Apparently, if you send a smiley face emoji in a work email, you’re at risk of seeming incompetent by your bosses.

Do people use emojis at work? And speaking of, what are Ireland’s most-used emojis?

“Paula emojis are just stupid, I do hate them and if I got one in a work email I WOULD think the person is stupid. Sorry”

- I suppose what you do for a living would have an impact too...if you’re composing...I dunno, test results for someone who’s sick you don’t want to send a letter saying sorry you’re not well, sadface. Are emojis silly? Yes. But friendship and romance can be silly too. Like language, dating is at its best when playful, non?

Then you’ve got people who send the wrong emoji – well-intentioned but misguided;

“Paula, my wife always used to always use emojis, ‘til her friend’s mam passed away and she sent a message to pass on her condolences...and ended it with a happy face. She never sent one again! - Jayo

“Paula I think emojis are a bit sarcastic, or maybe I’m reading them wrong. I’m a generation or 2 older!”

- No one likes sarcasm. We didn't need emoji to be obnoxious. And also – only use emojis your understand! When in doubt, leave them out. Never use emojis for which you don’t fully understand the meaning.

The office is not the place to experiment as you could inadvertently send the wrong message.

ALSO – LOL doesn’t mean lots of love. Don’t text someone and say “granny died, LOL x”

Anyway, with all this in mind – what ARE Ireland’s favourite emojis? The listeners of the Early Breakfast voted in their droves, and while there were many weird ones (!) there was one clear winner!

In 5th place, we have the THUMBS UP;

In 4th place, the MONKEY COVERING EYES

In 3rd place, the ANGRY FACE

In 2nd place, the SMILEY FACE

And Ireland’s favourite emoji, in a landslide victory, is....CRYING LAUGHING FACE

“Paula why do you have a vegetable as one of your top emojis? Hmmmm...?!” – Niall.

I just really like aubergines Niall.
