We were chatting in the office yesterday about our favourite albums of the '90s, and one that was mentioned quite a few times was Alanis Morissette's 'Jagged Little Pill'. It came out in late '95, and turns out, it went to No. 1 on the 7th of October! (Today!)
Having only been on the scene a short while before she got into the studio to write and record the album, it wasn't expected that 'Jagged Little Pill' would achieve such huge success; selling 33 million copies worldwide and leading Morissette to win 4 of the 6 Grammy Awards for which she was nominated.
The album's best known songs are 'You Oughta Know' and 'All I Really Want' which then-Red Hot Chili Peppers band-mates Flea and Dave Navarro played the music for, and 'Hand In My Pocket' and 'Ironic' which was reportedly penned in 15 minutes by Morissette and Glen Ballard. 'Ironic' became the biggest selling single from the album and itself won 2 Grammy Awards for Record Of The Year and Best Short Form Music Video.
To this day, Jagged Little Pill is still the third best selling album of all time by a female artist, falling behind only Whitney Houston's 'The Bodyguard' and Shania Twain's 'Come On Over'.
Bring back some memories of when MTV actually played music videos by watching the iconic 'Ironic' video here:
