The summer holidays are well and truly here but growing up in Ireland and jetting off for two weeks in Portugal wasn't really on the cards when it came to getting away from it all.
It was more a caravan in Cavan, and looking back at these simpler times – there's no denying it was glorious.
Remember Trobolgon?!
Did you even grow up in Ireland if you didn’t spend a few weeks at this iconic summer getaway spot?
The Cork holiday village was THE place to be, everyone in your class went at one stage or another. You’ll never forget that feeling of excitement; the first time you clapped your eyes on that amazing looping yellow slide.
Game changer.
Day Trippin’
Was it even a holiday if you could get back to your house that same day?
So many summers were spent visiting nearby beaches, local crazy golf courses and anywhere that had a Waltzer for you to hop on - all under the guise that you were ‘on your summer holidays.’
Camping in a random field
Back in the day, camping was the go-to holiday of choice for most Irish families.
You’d spend hours running around the countryside, sleeping top-to-toe with your brother or sister and watching your Dad attempt to put a tent together with no instructions and only half the necessary parts. Those were the glory days.
Breakfast was usually made up of sausages burnt to a crisp and by the end of the week, you were definitely eating some questionable bread.
'Tis far from Instagram-able brunches with smashed avocado and freshly poured Tropicana we were reared!
It’s All Relative
There was always that one relative who made an appearance once a year just so your family could stay with them, because they lived by the seaside.
There were seldom enough beds, or spaces at the kitchen table and your Mam would always send you out to play with your cousin’s friends, who were always older and a little bit cooler than you.
But still, at least there was the beach!
