ENNIS
If you base yourself in Ennis you can experience this special town and easily explore all of Clare! Ennis offers excellent accommodation options, and you can enjoy exploring its history, its unique boutiques and shops, cosy cafés and top-class restaurants. Nearby, Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, set on 26 acres, is a real family favourite.
NORTH CLARE
Head to North Clare, and you are spoiled for choice. Take in the Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark. Formed millions of years ago, its geology, flora, cliffs, caves, archaeology and history set it apart as a special place. You can explore the Burren's underworld at either of its two showcaves – Doolin Cave or at the Aillwee Burren Experience. Don't miss the Cliffs of Moher. Their sheer scale always amazes. You can also take a short cruise beneath the cliffs for spectacular views. If you fancy a day trip to the Aran Islands, they are easily reached by ferry from Doolin.
WEST CLARE
Then there is West Clare, an area of unspoilt, natural beauty. Check out Loop Head Peninsula and the wonderful Loop Head Lighthouse experience. Experience the Victorian charm of the Kilkee seaside resort, or take in Kilrush and include a dolphin-watching cruise or a boat trip to Scattery Island – one of the most important sites of early Christian Ireland. Vandeleur Gardens in Kilrush, one of Ireland’s finest gardens, is a family favourite.
CLARE'S COASTLINE
If you love the coast, take in the coastline of both North and West Clare. Chill out at any of Clare's seven blue-flag beaches at Cappagh Kilrush, Fanore, Kilkee, Lahinch, Spanish Point, White Strand Doonbeg, or White Strand Miltown Malbay. You can also take to the water to enjoy swimming, surfing, kayaking, paddle-boarding, sea angling, or diving. Local activity companies offer 'learn to' lessons and on-the-water activities and tours.
EAST CLARE
For a very different experience, choose East Clare. This area preserves the best of everything in a fresh, visitor-friendly environment with towns and villages like Tulla, Tuamgraney, Feakle, Scarriff, Mountshannon, and the twin towns of Killaloe/Ballina. East Clare boasts magnificent Lough Derg and the Shannon Waterway. It provides an opportunity to experience wonderful on-water and water-side trails and exhilarating activities. Several activity providers offer lessons and on-the-water guided tours. The area has two blue-flag inland beaches at Ballycuggeran (Killaloe) and Mountshannon. In summer, you can also take a one-hour lake cruise from Ballina/Killaloe. Worth a special mention is the West Lake Aqua Park on Lough Derg near Killaloe. The inflatable obstacle course on the water is a fun and an epic adventure for all the family.
