As I was making my way to work this morning, I walked by a handsome, suited man and as I passed, I got that lovey whiff of expensive aftershave. I don't know who that man was and he disappeared off into the morning but, I would have run into the sunset with him purely because he smelled lovely. It got me thinking about those other scents that make me happy and so....... here they are:
Baking Bread
Remember, in old cartoons when a pie would be put on the window sill to cool down and the dog would float across the garden towards it? That’s the way I feel about that beautiful fresh baking smell. I used to live opposite a bakery in Maynooth and at about 4am every night, they would fire up the ovens and the streets of the town would be filled with the most delicious aroma imaginable. I’d often be making my way home from some party at that time and I’d have to physically stop myself floating towards the smell like a little cartoon dog. My mouth is watering even thinking about those fresh éclairs and custard slices and the bread, oh the bread. Mmmmmm.
Freshly washed sheets
There is actually NOTHING better than climbing into a freshly made bed after a long hard day. Snuggling into a freshly made bed that smells like joy and sunshine is absolutely the best feeling in the world.
BBQ
Picture this; the sun is shining, you’ve just clocked off work, Today FM (naturally) is playing the best summer tunes and you are in brilliant form. As you make your way home, you sniff that unmistakeable aroma of a BBQ - a mixture of heated coals, sizzling meat and tangy BBQ sauce and you decide there and then that you’re firing up the BBQ the minute you get home. (But, when you get to the local supermarket, there isn’t a bundy to be found, the whole neighbourhood has had the same thought.)
Coconut
Coconut body butter. Coconut shampoo. Coconut hand cream. Gorgeous. It’s nearly like being on holidays in Hawaii whilst sitting at your desk. Nearly.
Fried onions / garlic
Even just thinking of this one is making me salivate. Yum. The smell of fried onion wafting around the house on a miserable wet Tuesday evening is UNREAL. Usually coupled with a lovely big steak.
Ah lads, I’m going to have to go and get a bit of grub into me here, I’m ravenous thinking about all these lovely smells. And while I’m at it, I’ll slather myself in coconut body butter and get into bed. Grand.
