It was immediately clear that something was wrong after Jose Vergara Acevedo entered a lift in Chile and selected the button for his floor. The lift started moving before the doors closed and began to ascend rapidly – it is reported to have reached speeds of 80km per hour – before crashing into the roof.
Acevedo was seriously injured, having suffered head and leg injuries, and is recovering in hospital.
The building is apparently only eight months old - it's not yet known what caused it to malfunction.
