The new bridge connects Marlborough Street on the northside with Hawkins Street on the southside and will carry the cross-city Luas from 2017.

It was officially named yesterday in honour of trade union activist Rosie Hackett.

Rosie Hackett became involved in the fight for trade union membership rights. She co-founded the Irish Women Workers' union, was involved in the 1913 strike and lock-out, and was a member of the Irish Citizen Army. She was briefly imprisoned in Kilmainham Jail for her involvement in the 1916 Rising.

Rosie Hackett died in 1976, at the age of 82.
