Ebola virus disease is one of the world’s most virulent diseases - outbreaks have a case fatality rate of up to 90%.

The scale of the ongoing outbreak is unprecedented. Between March and the end of July, there were approximately 1,323 confirmed and suspected cases reported and 729 deaths in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

These figures have greatly increased in the last 10 weeks. A total of 8,399 confirmed, probable, and suspected cases of Ebola virus disease were reported in 7 affected countries (Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Spain and the USA) up to the end of 8th October. There have been 4,033 deaths (Data: World Health Organisation).
