Isn’t the true spirit of Halloween really all about shoving delicious treats down our gob?
Just waiting for the kids to go to bed, all hopped up on sugar, and then stealing the best bits from their bag o’treats.
But when it comes to the ultimate Halloween treat you can’t bate a bit of barmbrack.
What's not to love about a fortune telling cake, which is so more than just a sultana studded loaf.
The humble barmbrack is best served with lashings of butter and a steaming hot cuppa.
But Barmbrack really comes alive when you cut into it and all the things you’ve hidden in there come out with each tasty bite.
The Magic 8 Ball of Cakes
We all know finding the ring means an impending marriage.
A coin means a great fortune is on its way to you, happy days, but a rag means bad luck/poverty will soon strike.
Not so great.
A stick means an unhappy marriage, while a dry pea means if you are single, you’re not getting married anytime soon.
Perhaps the oddest one of all: a medal means you will join a religious order.
According to award-winning food writer and TV Chef Lilly Higgins, “You soak all your fruit in tea overnight. If you can’t do it overnight a quick 15 minute soak is grand."
The type of tea you use is totally your preference.
Lyons, Barrys or even fancy flavoured tea are all fine to use.
Add spices and a splash of orange juice, your dry ingredients and then all of your rags, coins and rings!
What a cake! You can listen to the chat in full here.
