The beautiful fiancée of George Clooney, Amal Alamuddin, arrived back into the UK, after her engagement, wearing a seven-carat emerald-cut ring worth about £415,900.
According to HM Revenue & Customs, travellers arriving from non-EU countries can only bring in goods worth up to £390 without having to pay tax and/or duty. As the ring is worth more than this, it’s subject to VAT and customs duty – with an estimated bill of £93,000.
It’s not the first time that celebrities have been called up on certain purchases. In 1998, Victoria Beckham was asked to pay a tax bill of £3,000 after failing to declare an engagement ring she bought for David Beckham. And Cherie Blair was questioned about some valuable pearls that she brought back from China.
