These modern commandments have been put together by Country Life magazine to mark the launch of the magazine's Gentleman of the Year Award. We think the don'ts are a bit unfair. What do you think?
DOS
A gentleman:
- Is at ease in any situations and puts others at their ease
- Is always on time
- Dresses to suit the occasion
- Makes love on his elbows
- Occasionally gets drunk, but never disorderly
- Is mindful of others' financial circumstances
DON'TS
A gentleman does not:
- Wear a pre-tied bow tie
- Drink Malibu
- Buy fuchsia trousers
- Tweet
- Put products in his hair
- Wear Lycra
- Write with a ballpoint
- Plant gladioli
- Own a cat
What happened to paying for dinner, holding the door open and saying please and thank you? We agree with the pre-tied bow tied, and there’s a time and a place for lycra, but we’ve got nothing against our biro-wielding, cat-loving, socially engaged modern man. We even think coloured trousers are rather posh, really.
